Impact of climate change on water resources and children health with sustainable water future

H Paramesh

Climate change is certainly a reality and the defining issues of 21st Century. The recent greenhouse gases emissions are the highest in the history contributing for global warming of the climate system. It is observed warming of oceans and rising of sea level, diminished snow and ice caps and glaciers. The change in the surface temperatures and evaporation can lead to altered pattern of rainfall; reduce the quality of drinking water even though they are supplied by conventional treatment system. The South East Asia is experiencing the 44% of all the global disorders with extreme weather in the form of storms, floods, heat waves, droughts. Risks from glacial lake outburst foods. Earth’s 70% of the surface is from water, in that 2.5 to 3% is fresh water less than 1% is accessible for utility. The water pollution and other factors further reduce the access by 2/3, over 1.1 billion people have no access to quality drinking water. Children are the most vulnerable from water pollution because – they have unique different exposure, dynamic development physiology-drink more water per unit of body weight, have highest absorption, elimination and metabolism. Critical windows of development, longer life expectancy and they are politically powerless. India supports 1/6th of World population, 1/25th of water resources and 1/50th of worlds land. The availability of water per capita is 170cum/ca/yr compared to North America > 3600 cum/ca/yr over 17% of rural water supply is non-functioning in Asia and South America.
